Such sights as this array of steps between Batteries Plunkett and Adams, edged with lush, unkempt grass, always make me think of the enormous amount of effort and money that went into the defense of America's shores...particularly that of the Endicott Period, a huge expense that ultimately went untested. Were all of these massive fortifications effective as a deterrent, or would America's distance from that other hemisphere have been enough to keep the early 20th century attack dogs of the old world at bay?

Whatever: Stairs.
