Alba Carolina Citadel

Alba Iulia, Romania
Alba Iulia in Transylvania is one of those cities that has been claimed by several different peoples over the centures: The Romans, Hungarians, Germans and Turks all had different names for the place...but since 1918 it has been part of Romania.

The fortress as it looks today was built between 1716 and 1735 during the reign of Holy Roman Empire Emperor and Habsburg Big Cheese Charles VI (1685-1740) by Giovanni Morando Visconti in the style of Vauban. Amongst the materials used to build up the fortress walls are Roman ruins. Inside the boundaries of the fortress are a library, university, cathedrals, a palace and various other buildings.

Through the 18th and 19th centuries the Alba Carolina Citadel was used as a military center of Transylvania and an armaments dump.
