BUT all mucking about in the dark must come to an end eventually, so here we are finally heading into Fort Warren's main gate.
From the sign to the left: VISITORS ENTERING THE PREMISES DO SO AT THEIR OWN RISK AND SHALL BE UNDERSTOOD TO ABSOLVE THE COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION AND RECREATION (DCR) OF ANY LIABILITY FOR INJURY ARISING OUT OF EITHER THE CONDITION OF THE PREMISES OR ANY ACTIVITIES TAKING PLACE THEREIN.
So by walking past that sign, I had essentially checked the box labeled "AGREE" at the end of thirteen pages of dense legalese that cleared the way for me to use free software. But, if that statement is all I needed to "agree" with to get into the fort, it was way better than them spending a bazillion dollars to make it "safe" for everyone inside. Because a safe starfort would be a sucky starfort. As signs state at For Macon in North Carolina, "Forts were made for war, not safety. Watch your step, dumbass!" Or words to that effect.
