Just behind the north (demi)bastion was the Officers' Quarters. In a fort that was by all accounts pretty damp and miserable to live in, the Officers' Quarters was reportedly quite dry and comfy. Sadly, it burned in January of 1887 along with the citadel and much of Fort Pike's supplies...but honestly, what are you doing sticking a big honking building atop your terreplein, in full view of God & everybody? Once the second story was added to the citadel, it also stuck way up, and I guess they figured that anybody interested in shooting at the fort already had that big tall thing to aim at, so how much harm can one more inappropriate structure do?
