...and to the right, at the western bastion. Already, those cracks that seem to represent a clear and present danger to Fort Pike are evident! It looks as though the western bastion could just snap off and sink into the depths at any moment, as surely that moat is at least a thousand feet deep*.

*It is not a thousand feet deep. Fort Pike's moat was designed to be around 25 feet wide and a mere two to four feet deep, with a muddy bottom of four to six feet. Not deep enough to support crocodiles (or locally present alligators), but plenty deep enough to make sloshing through it whilst under fire an unpleasant chore.
