We have of course noted that every gun we've seen at Fort Ligonier, in fact just about every piece of metal larger than a thimble, sports the King's seal on it somewhere or other. Except this Garrison Piece, which has had its seal scraped off! Was this piece under imminent threat of capture at some other location (Fort Ligonier was attacked a couple of times during the French and Indian War, but was never seriously threatened), and instead of spiking the gun and rendering it useless to the enemy, did its crew chip away the King's seal, lest it fall into the hands of Frenchmen, who would laugh and say snotty things about the poor quality of the King's emblem?
