The Guard Room ('H!'). According to little sign therein, guards at Fort James Jackson would serve two hours on duty and two hours off, for a 24-hour period. During the summer months, when swarms mosquitoes would rapidly murder anyone who was so foolish as to expose himself for a few minutes, guards would be rotated from the city twice a day...assumedly to replace those who had succumbed to yellow fever. Surely the consensus of everyone who stood guard duty at this station in the summer was, "let the British/Yankees/Rebs have this hellish place!!"
