Back inside the fort and to the left of the southern sallyport, we see the all-important Officers' Latrine. Openings in the brick wall at the bottom of this latrine were connected to the moat, and as the tide filled the moat, the rising water flushed out the waste...a process which surely worked perfectly. A wood and brick structure enclosed these basins, with ventilation shafts running up their sides. Every bit as comfortable as the nearby modern facilities, no doubt...it even had its own officers' firing loophole in the back!
