To the right of the gate squats a plaque that bestows upon the fort status as a NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK, in that it possesses national significance in commemorating the history of the United States of America, so awarded in 2000 by the National Park Service and the US Department of the Interior. I was kind of hoping that all this meant there was a Slurpee™ machine installed therein, but apparently not.
