To Fort Griswold's southeast lies a field, which faces the fort's southeast bastion. This field is rather small today (just like everything else at Fort Griswold), but one imagines that Groton's suburbs hadn't quite reached today's expanse in 1781. During the Battle of Groton Heights, a number of British troops reportedly lay in this field, sheltering from the fort's fire behind these rocks.
