There is a small wooden walkway along one side of the fort, from which one can peer over the edge. The nice re-enactors whom you'll see in a moment told me that the 1930's CCC reconstruction effort of Fort Frederick was perhaps a bit...overexuberant? The fort's walls were almost entirely crumbled in some places and mostly complete in others, and the challenge was to pull together the remaining bits and pieces in an historically convincing manner, without the benefit of any original building plans. Add to this an extremely enthusuastic state governor overseeing the project and an army of unskilled laborers, and you wind up with some questionable results. Still, I for one am very appreciative of their efforts.
